Glen Johnson has praised the support of the England fans, claiming the team and supporters have formed a "tight unit" ahead of Sunday's Euro 2012 quarter final clash with Italy.

England's 1-0 win against Ukraine on Tuesday, a result which secured qualification to the quarter-finals, attracted 18.5m viewers - the highest TV audience of the year so far.

And Johnson, who has featured in all of England's EURO 2012 games thus far, lauded the support of the travelling fans in Poland and Ukraine and the supporters back home.

"I've just been told about the record rating of viewers for the game so the fans are there to support us," he said.

"And it feels like we're a tight unit."

Johnson also hailed the return of Wayne Rooney, who scored the winner against Ukraine after missing the first two games of the Finals through suspension.

When asked how significant Rooney's availability was, Johnson said: "Massive. If you're going to do well in tournaments like this you need your best players available, so obviously, it's great to have him back."

The England right-back then turned his thoughts to Sunday's quarter-final, insisting that confidence is high in the Three Lions camp.

"We're positive at the moment and we're hopeful," he added.

"Any team that's in the tournament has got a chance of winning it. The first objective was to get out of the group, and we did that very well by winning the group. So now it's a one-off game - and in a one-off game you can beat anyone.

"We'll just try and set out to be hard to beat. Then we know we've some fantastic players in the side that can hurt any defence."
