Steven Gerrard was full of pride after his Man of the Match performance in England's win over Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine as they progressed to the knock-out stages of the competition.

The Liverpool and Three Lions captain was superb in both attack and defence for Roy Hodgson's men, setting up the winning goal for the returning Wayne Rooney. And he said it was the sort of performance he expected from his group-topping team-mates

“We came into a difficult group and the idea was to try and win it,” Gerrard said.

“We have been criticised in the past for not turning up and performing but we can take that and the important thing is you respond and that is what this team is doing.”

England will now face Italy in the quarter final in Kiev on Sunday night and Gerrard expects another tough game.

“We play Italy and if we do well in the next we might play Spain they are both fantastic so we take each game at a time,” he said.

“Italy have match winners and we will give them respect.”

England were finally the recipients of a refereeing decision in their favour, when John Terry cleared from under the bar when the ball looked to have cross the line, and the skipper believes that sort of fortune could take the team a long way

“You need luck, you don’t win these tournaments without it. You need a little bit of luck along the way.”
