Captain John Terry hailed the England fans after the Three Lions rounded off a highly successful international week with a 1-0 victory over Sweden at Wembley.

It was England’s second win by the same scoreline in four days, following success over World and European champions Spain on Saturday.

Fabio Capello gave youngsters such as Jack Rodwell, Kyle Walker and Daniel Sturridge their chance against Sweden and was rewarded with a performance that could have seen the hosts win by more.

And Terry believed both those youngsters and the supporters meant it was a positive night at Wembley.

“In the two games we have done excellently,” said the Chelsea centre-back. “We kept two clean sheets, and had some promising performances from the young players – the last ten days have been great.

“We always have to believe, and we have shown in the last couple of games that we can compete with the best in the world.

“What is important is that a lot of players were rested from the Spain game, players came in, are fighting for places and want to prove themselves. Everyone did themselves justice tonight."

He added: “The England fans have always been with me and the players and are always right behind us: win, lose or draw.

“They get upset at times, like we all do. We are very passionate and that is what makes us the very best – we have a great set of fans, and if we can continue this momentum for the next six months then hopefully everything will be a lot better.”
