Gary Cahill believes England captain John Terry was 'first class' in the friendly win over Sweden following the recent controversy surrounding the defender.

Terry has been accused of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand - an allegation he strenuously denies - and he was left on the bench for Saturday's victory over Spain.

However, the centre-half returned to skipper England in Tuesday's 1-0 success over the Swedes at Wembley and thanked the fans for their backing during the ongoing investigation.

Cahill started the game alongside Terry and feels playing football may have provided the Chelsea captain with a certain sense of relief.

Relief
"I think sometimes the relief is when you are playing football away from whatever is going on away from the football pitch," Cahill told Sky Sports.

"He was first class tonight as you saw and it's very easy and comfortable to play alongside him."

Kyle Walker marked his first start for England by producing a man-of-the-match display and Cahill believes the performance bodes well for next summer's European Championship.

The Bolton stopper added: "I thought he did really well. Kyle getting man of the match on his first cap is very pleasing.

"I think it's an exciting time. If these lads can get more involved, just like the rest of us, it gives them that vital experience coming into the summer."
